BJ’s property is not only the local hang-out for fourteen deer, but because of the several birdfeeders, it’s also home to numerous birds. BJ starts every day with a cup of coffee in the living room where she can watch different varieties of birds dining on the feeders outside. “It really helps me clear my mind and get ready to plan my day,” she says.

This successful businesswoman couldn’t think of a better place to wake up. It’s her dream home. But it didn’t feel like it when she and her husband, Terry, moved in with nothing but a box spring and a mattress.

The dream rose out of the ashes of a nightmare. BJ’s previous house had burned down. She lost everything. And while BJ was devastated at first, the experience would eventually be freeing. Before the fire, she was more interested in things-like the special china no one was allowed to use. She realizes now that things are just the props in our memories. They’re meant to be enjoyed. For BJ, those memories revolve around her family. Despite the fact that she maintained a successful career while raising her kids, BJ was also a full-time mom. She was often carting her kids around in a van, taking them to boy scout meetings and little league games. The van had a custom license plate which read: “4 BOYS.” A reminder, says BJ, that everything she and her husband were doing was for their boys. BJ has had many successes, but she believes her greatest was turning her four sons into four fine, young men.
